Lineup for Avery Tasting

Really looking forward to pairing cheeses with three Avery Beers at the Map Room Wednesday.  Chad Wulff from Windy City Distributing will be busy this week promoting the new Joe’s Premium American Pilsner from the Boulder, Colo. brewery. The Pilsner is rolling into Chicago in 12-ounce aluminum containers. On Wednesday, starting at 7 pm, Chad will be at the Map Room where Joe’s and two other Avery beers will be on tap. Cheese and Cheers has selected four cheeses for some knockout combos with the Avery beers. The full lineup is below. This is also the Third Wednesday of the month, so it’s the Chicago Beer Society social night, where card-carrying members get discounts on certain draft beers. See ya Wednesday at Armitage and Hoyne!

Beer Style: Belgian Pale Ale.    OG: 1.048      ABV: 5.2%     IBUs: 10          Color: Amber.

Karma Ale is a decidedly fruity and estery ale, intricate in body and nose, all driven by a unique Belgian yeast strain.

Cheese Pairing: Les Freres, Crave Bros. Creamery, Waterloo, Wis. You may catch of a whiff of the farm, but this washed rind walks mostly on the mild side, with fresh creamy flavors and just a touch of tartness. These mild flavors will cozy up to the yeasty, fruity Karma.

Joe’s Premium American Pilsner

OG: 1.048        ABV: 4.7%        IBUs: 42
A contemporary rendition of a classic style, Joe’s is beautifully bitter and dry with an abundance of floral, Noble German hops. “Uber sessionable and Utterly American,” Avery says.

Cheese Pairing: L’Amuse Signature Gouda is made in the Netherlands with milk from Holstein Friesians.  It is then aged for two years at cellar temperatures, developing a full, deep flavor with hints of burnt caramel. The texture, is velvety and melts in the mouth. We expect this sweet caramel flavor to contrast nicely with the clean malt and sharply-edged bitterness of Joe’s Pilsner.

L'Amuse Ghouda comes from a wonderful place in the Netherlands to a wonderful place in Chicago to pair with Avery's new Joe's Premium Pilsner.

Beer Style: Double India Pale Ale

OG: 1.076

ABV: 8.5%      IBUs: 93

Color: Deep Gold

Avery calls it “a brutally bitter, dank, piney and resinous ale designed for those seeking a divine hop experience.” One Beer Advocate description includes:

Aroma: Pine resin, tulips, pineapple, fresh dirt, all followed by a sweet, country white bread background. The taste is heavy on resinous hops, pine, earth and dried apple all well balanced by the malts.

Cheese Pairings (two for the price of one): Asher Blue, from Sweetgrass Dairy, Thomasville, Ga. is a raw cow’s milk blue cheese with a dense, creamy paste. The creaminess should massage the bitterness of the DuganA and the piquancy of the blue mold will play off the sweet malt and piney hop flavors of the beer.

Hooks Two Year Cheddar, Mineral Point, Wis.,  is aged just enough to bring out some acidity and sweet balance, with a firm, creamy texture. These characteristics complement and contrast a big balanced extra-IPA  like DuganA.
