I get a kick out of discovering new craft brewers and cheese artisans. I also love tasting home run releases from established producers.  Thanks to an invitation from the Small Bar, I’ll be doing just that on Thursday July 29 at the newest Small Bar location on Fullerton. Please come out and join us at 7 pm.

Beer manager Chad Lynd and I will pair five artisan cheeses with five craft beers. We’ll  taste them, mix up the pairings, and talk about how they go together and why. We’ll offer some background about the products and the craftspeople and give you some tips on how to select and pair craft beer and artisan cheese.

Have you had any of the beers from the Bruery? This is a wonderful young company from Southern California that specializes in Belgian style beers. Their beers have been in the Chicago market for less than a year, but they have really made in impression.  We’ll have a beer from the Rue family in the lineup. Great Lakes Brewing makes some of the most subtly balanced beers in the Midwest, but I hear there is nothing subtle about its new Lake Erie Monster Imperial IPA. We’ll have to pair that with a newly released old Cheddar or something.

Vermont Butter and Cheese Creamery has a new addition to its aged French-style cheese line. Cremont is a mixed milk, extra-cream cheese that should pair nicely with a rich malty beer. Also from Vermont comes Moses Sleeper, a new bloomy rind cheese from Jasper Hill Farm, named for yet another historical local figure.  The Cellars at Jasper Hill is also introducing small Vermont cheesemakers and their products to consumers outside of Vermont.  Perhaps we will taste one of these beauties too.

You can make reservations now by calling the Small Bar at 773.772.2727. Hope to see you there!
